Sally G. Posey
Sally joins me in our "Glory Days" remembering her memories of Jordan High School, our teachers, her Jerry Posey and their marriage and other memories. Some of our readers will have flash backs of what they were doing at the time Sally is talking of her memories.
A couple of weeks ago Ron, Jan and I were having dinner at the Cracker Barrel and sitting across the room from us was Jack Brinkley and Sally. I walked over to speak to Jack, who was many years ago my mother's Lawyer and we started talking about Columbus Georgia On Line and my "Glory Days" stories. Sally spoke up about her "Happy Days" at Jordan and Living in Columbus (Sally was born in Girard, Alabama).
Needless to say the first thing I asked Sally, was " Would she like to be a guest writer on "Glory Days "and share her memories?" "Oh Yes", she said, with a sweet smile and the memories started flooding her mind. You could tell Sally was already gathering her memories together. We chattered away as Jack tried to get a word in, but you can't come between two Jordan High students.
This is Sally's first visit on Columbus Georgia Online, "Glory Days." I'm sure it won't be her last. I know Sally has so many memories of our Columbus, Georgia, Jordan High School and her worshiping and working in her Church . I share many of Sally's memories about Jordan High , the Tornado and also Mrs. Green. I know others will connect their memories with Sally ,as well.
My first memories of Sally and Jerry Posey are their working and Praising the Heavenly Father and both giving their talents of singing to Praise the Father and His Son In their Church. I have more memories of Sally wearing a Choir Robe while singing in Church than Street clothes. I am in hopes Sally will one day write about how she and Jerry served the Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Even thou Jerry is no longer with us, Jerry died sometimes in 2000, (about the time my Carlton died). Sally carries on her Faith in the Heavenly Father that she shared for many year with her Jerry.
Thanks Sally for sharing your memories; also, thanks readers for letting me share my memories.

Sally G. Posey
When I went to Jordan High School for four years, my name was Sally Jo Geiger.
During my freshman year there I fell in love with Jerry John Posey who was a junior at the time. We courted all through my high school days, the last two of them he was working here in Columbus, and then he attended North Georgia Military Academy. ..We married the year I graduated, which was in June 1953...Jerry went home to be with the Lord on February 26, 2000..We were married 46 1/2 years....and have two sons, a daughter, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren...It's been a wonderful life.
I think the things I remember the most about Jordan High School were my teachers....Mrs. Benson, Miss Mamie Cole, Mrs. Green, Miss Cox...Mrs. Taylor...I think possibly that teachers do not realize the long term influence that they have on a life..I think I will write about Miss Mamie Cole tonight...She taught bookkeeping and I loved being in her class. The first thing everyone talked about was the picture of Clark Gable that she had on her bulletin board...the word was out that she was in love with him....She was round and short, and really not pretty...but, very pleasant...there was no way that you could fail in her class, because she put every transaction on the board, and you simply had to copy it! One of her favorite sayings was, "Ink your pens"....When she found out that I was going to marry Jerry, who had been her student before me, she had me to come up in the front of the class...Her words to me and to us all, "This is Miss Geiger...she is going to marry Mr. Posey...I am very happy about this because Mr. Posey will make a good husband because he's just a little bit conceited and this is very important. A man needs to be just a little bit conceited , then he will make a better man!...
The class that I had with her had a lunch beak in the middle of it....and so when we came back from lunch, everyone watched while she got out her compact and put on her lipstick...it seems to me she had little tiny lips, and it took forever...Why she waited until she got back to class to do this is beyond me...but, she was precious, and I felt very loved by her, and really learned a lot about keeping books in her class...
Naturally, at the time, she seemed quite old...but, I'll bet she was younger than I could imagine...
Miss Mamie Cole, a legend in her time...God rest her soul...she walked through my life and made some helpful footprints...
April 18th, 1953 Tornado In the Jordan Johnson Area
As well as I can remember, April 18, 1953 started off as a beautiful day...It wasn't until later in the afternoon that the skies became ominously black and the winds began to blow...I was seventeen years old...I was about to graduate from Jordan Vocational High School...My graduation date would be June 2, and my wedding date would be on June 6...of that same year...The wedding invitations had already been printed...we would marry at Sherwood Methodist Church, a church where my family had become charter members. The church had started in my Aunt Clara Murry's living room, and I was in that handful of saints when I was thirteen...along with my precious mother..
Jerry Posey was going to be my husband in just a few short weeks, and he was working quite hard to finish the "cabin" in my mother and daddy's back yard. Daddy had earlier decided to build a storage room onto our existing garage, and it had turned into a little house...with a bath and shower, a small kitchen, and one large room that would become our bedroom and living room combined...We had planned to pay them $25.00 a month rent...but, that never happened:-)
It was late in the day, maybe between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m,. when my mother and I decided to go out to the "cabin" and check on Jerry and daddy and see how things were progressing with the sheet rock installation. Jerry was up in the corner on a ladder using his hammer...My older sister, Judy, along with my youngest sister, Adleyn, were in the big house...it was located directly across the street from the baseball field of Jordan High School...It seemed that just a few minutes passed, and my daddy sensed that something big was about to happen, and told Jerry to get down off the ladder, instructed mother and me to get under a large, overstuffed chair, which he turned over on us to protect us, and then with one hand picked up the mattress off the bed and held it up against the wall to his left....he said, "Here it comes", and I wasn't sure if he meant the wall, or the rush of wind...our little "cabin" seemed to shudder a little, but, she didn't fall...The four car brick garage in our neighbors yard, which was about four feet from us was totally demolished from the full force of the tornado...but, we were spared, and we were unhurt,,,Our neighborhood (The Jordan-Johnson School section of Columbus) took a direct hit, and the field of pine trees that stood so proudly behind the baseball field at Jordan were suddenly strewn like match stems and the ground was bare...Power lines were down, cars crushed, roofs lifted right off houses, electrical wires hanging from every power pole.....But, as we would thankfully find out, our big house was untouched, my sisters were fine, and so was the "cabin"...we were all traumatized, but were in great condition.
Shortly after that Jerry and some other young men found bathing suits, in that it was still raining, and began to do a neighborhood search...In just a short while, he came running in our front door, arms flailing....and said with a loud voice, "The church is FLAT"..My mother began to cry...
It was only the day before that our little Methodist church had been completely paid for...Our pastor, Rev. C. E. "Ned" Steele put a sign out the next morning that said, SHERWOOD WILL RISE AGAIN....
The only thing that had been left was the organ, and a velvet curtain with a cross on it.
And Sherwood would rise again...and the field that was left bare at Jordan would become a track field...
We married in the chapel at St. Paul Methodist Church...and we lived in our little "cabin" for many months...I always felt safe there...God had been so merciful. Written, January 15, 2007
I guess it's probably risky business when you start describing a person that you haven't seen in over fifty years....but, another one of my teachers at Jordan High School in the early fifties really impressed me...Her name was Mrs. Green....Her reputation was that it was difficult to make a good grade in her class....but, that if you could get a seat on the front row and if you would watch her, you could make a good grade! Well, I decided to do just that, if it was possible....and my seat was on the middle row, in the first seat...and that just happened to be right where she stood when she gave her test. She would stand there and write on a small piece of paper, deciding what questions to ask as she went along. Everyone seemed to agree that nothing she asked was in our homework......................but, away she went...and that was her style...I remember making a good grade in Mrs. Green's class, and I was relieved...
When I see her now in my mind's eye...I see a tall, thin woman, with slightly stooped shoulders...her hair was mostly grey...and natural curly...the word was that her husband bought her clothes, and that they were very pricey...she wore a lot of satin...satin suits, if I remember right...very nice, expensive looking garments...but, the thing that I remembered about her personal appearance the most was her fingernails...She kept them expertly polished...and they were so long they curled under....I mean, WAY UNDER...no acrylic needed here..it was all natural....
And so there she stood..leaning her bony hips on her desk, right in front of me.. with an almost sinister smile.... that said, "You just wait and see what I come up with today!" ..Those long fingernails of one hand were hardly able to grasp the pencil, and the nails of the other hand were attempting to hold the small piece of folded paper......making markings to help her remember what she had asked us on our test...She reminded me of a character out of a mystery novel...a little scary...but, and yet, she seemed to have a good heart...Let's just say, she was a "character" who impressed me....she made me work hard, and I learned a lot from her...I liked Mrs. Green, and she liked me....that's the best part!
