Library of Congress Welcome to the Library of Congress, the nation's oldest federal cultural institution. The Library preserves a collection of nearly 121 million items, more than two-thirds of which are in media other than books. Smithsonian Institution The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 with funds bequeathed to the United States by James Smithson.
