Drive-in Movie Overwhelming Success
by Mike Dukes
A light rain sprinkle and cloud cover cooled it down just before showtime and the night was comfortable. The people were polite, courteous, and smiling. Another light sprinkle around 11pm was a good excuse to take the little ones home to bed. I was surprised by the number of umbrellas that materialized. Columbus folks came prepared and many, many people stayed till the end.
Our Special thanks to Jarrod’s Pest Products, GiGi’s Cupcakes, and Sweet Frog’s Yogurt Shop, who all co-sponsored the event. Please support these businesses at every opportunity. If you haven’t been to the beautiful Landing Shopping Plaza during the evening hours, you should take an opportunity to go out there and have a good time. There is plenty to do for everyone. Great stores, restaurants and they even have mini play parks for children and the kids were all well behaved and having a good time. This evening looked like the America I remember.
“The parking lot was full, when we arrived to set up. By the time we cleared an area to put the trailer holding the projector we were running late, but a good crew including Jim Anthony, Hugh Thomas, Chuck Peterson, Roy Cook, Jessie Hall, Tom Chadwick and I, got the brand new Jim Anthony screen up in time for John Gilbert to spin the first reel at 9:30pm.
Theater Popcorn was being popped and you could smell it coming from the makeshift snack bar. Smiling people stood in line to get theirs. The Front area near the screen was reserved for Lawn chairs and blankets and at one time had over 75 good movie going folks sitting there. Folks watching from their cars were packed in the next five rows with many parking their SUVs backwards and watching from inside. Tom Chadwick, host of the new internet Television show “Fountain City Sessions”, supplied theater sound to the camper chair viewers. The cars listened to the sound on their car stereos, cool.
We are planning our next Summer Fun, “Movie Under the Stars”, and will make the announcement here on Columbus Georgia Online. Thank you to all who came and those who supported our welcome to town party for Columbus-GA.TV. God bless Columbus, Ga. Last year Cook’s Place on Moon rd. presented the Georgia Bulldogs vs. Auburn Tigers game live “tailgating” in their spacious parking lot. We’re panning to do that again. Bigger and better! Get ready for that one.
NOTE: If your facility or venue is interested in promoting a Drive-in movie or a tailgating party contact Chuck Peterson at 1-770-560-4865. Several packages are available and affordable. See you at the Drive-in Movies.
